Going Public: Stories of Growing Up in the Projects

For Tom Calloway, growing up during the late 1980s in Sacramento on Seavey Circle was a nightmare.

“It was the worse place for crime in the city. I thought—I got to get out of here as fast as I can. Escape the poverty, drugs, gangs. Be somebody. I worked hard, got a scholarship to college and moved from the margins to a powerful position within the Clinton Administration.

“One day a fellow staffer asked me to talk to kids in the worst of Washington, D.C.’s projects. The kids shared stories of drive-by killings, children dealing drugs, and sisters prostituting themselves. The place looked like a war zone. I realized I never had it so good!”

Maryellen Burns, a local arts maven, tells a quite different story about growing up in New Helvetia and Sutter Homes in the 1950s.

“My brothers and I refer to it as the last great childhood. We had our share of miscreants, drunks, and abusers, but we also had a real sense of community. Neighbors who had next to nothing shared food and clothes with those who had even less. They watched your kids while you looked for a job or went to work, and loaned each other money when times got tough. As for us kids, we could explore our environment day or night until the street lights came on, knowing that any parent could swat your bottom if you got out of line, but also secure that they would watch out for you.”

These stories and others from notable Sacramentans who grew up in public housing, will be performed during “Going Public: Growing up in the Projects” at La Raza Galleria Posada (1024 22nd Street between K and J streets) on Friday, July 18 at 7:30 pm. Admission is $5 ($3 for students and seniors).

The public is invited to hear these tales, and perhaps share some of their own at an evening of stories from notable Sacramentans who grew up in public housing. The event is co-sponsored by Los Escritores del Nuevo Sol [Writers of the New Sun], the resident writers group of LRGP, and Matrix Arts, a regional non-profit arts organization (for which Burns is the director).

Burns is currently working with local freelance writer and photographer, Laura Martin, who is assisting for this event and hoping it will be a model for Sacramento Stories—a community story project series meant to capture the varied stories that make up Sacramento.

“I was inspired many years ago by Derek Powazek’s original City Stories project out of San Francisco,” said Martin. “He encouraged individuals from cities around the world to host story sites in which the city itself becomes a key character—personal, true stories about what it's like to be who you are, and live where you live."

“We’re also raising money to provide outreach to libraries, schools, and community centers throughout Sacramento County so everyone has a chance to capture their story,” Burns added. “With Sacramento Stories, we hope to encourage other communities to start their own story projects as well.”

Sacramento Stories Workshops will be held in the near future, designed to teach participants how to use the key elements of narrative to shape their life experiences into well-crafted stories, focusing on story creation and improvisational writing. A quarterly competition will encourage individuals to develop their stories, and work will be juried for inclusion in the website or to be performed in front of an audience.
